Athlete of the Month: Colleen Bennett

Questions:

1. What is your favorite WOD?
Favorite WOD is a chipper. Even though they tend to be a bit of a grind, I like the variety and the feeling of accomplishment when finished

2. What is your least favorite WOD?
Least favorite WOD is Brenton (5 rounds – 100ft Bear Crawl, 100ft Standing Broad Jump w/3 burpees after each 5 jumps). Only WOD I have ever wrote “this sucked” in my log book, altho the Long WOD Coleman was “not fun”

3. What is your favorite “cheat meal”?
Favorite cheat meal would be macaroni & cheese, chicken fingers and a Cook-Out milkshake

4. What is your favorite CFA moment?
In general: When someone gets a skill that they have been working on (series of DU in a row, first pull up, first HSPU, first box jump) or a PR weight heavier than they thought they could do and we all cheer as the bell is rung. Love those “heck ya-I just did that” smiles!

Personally: After the WOD for Dogs at Rowan CF last summer. Not only did I survive the day, but I did so much better than I thought and hoped I would. I was very overcome by it all.

Sean Bennett on his wife Colleen:

Colleen has been doing CrossFit for 3+ years. For Christmas one year, she asked for a personal fitness assessment from Justin so I got her an hour’s worth of time with Justin. During this time, she got to do the baseline assessment, and when she came home, she had a REAL BIG gleam in her eye. At that point, I said I don’t care what we have to do with our budget, but I wanted us to work it in so that she could actually join CFA.

She was a military brat & moved all over the US while she was growing up. She was born in San Francisco, moving to Alaska, Arizona, and settled into Northern Virginia when her dad took a job at the Pentagon.

Colleen was a swimmer in high school, and she still excels at exercises that require shoulder strength.

We have three kids but none together. Colleen’s kids are Tyler (age 28) who lives in Nashville and Ethan (22) who lives here in Winston-Salem. My son is Braeden (20), and he is in Spokane, Washington.

I thought Colleen deserved this recognition because she works hard during every workout and does NOT cut corners or take shortcuts, even when there are acceptable times to do so.

She did a TREMENDOUS job in the Open Workouts, finishing very high in the region (don’t recall the number) and #224 in the WORLD! No matter how busy she is, she makes time for CrossFit, and she makes time for others. She initiated the going away present for Haley and Hannah, and took care of our trainers after they did their 960 burpees as part of the Toes 2 Bar challenge. She came to support the folks doing the burpee mile and filmed a little bit as well. She is extremely supportive of everyone at the box and is our biggest cheerleader. Because of her time spent at CrossFit, she has built up her endurance and performed extremely well in numerous 5K events in the area. She has won her age group in the Moonlight Madness 5K and the Vineyard Stomp 5K series in Surry County.

Things she loves: Beating my time/number of reps in a WOD as well as tire flips and slams. (She can probably add to this list.)

Things she hates: Getting beaten by me in a WOD and anything over (This list as well.) head … snatches, jerks, OHS.
